Update 3/15/2019The replacement unit I received that failed I was successful in repairing. Had to replace the two output transistors, two resistors each 1.5 ohms, 3A safety fuse, and repair shorted solder pads. I'm surprised the TL494CN chip survived but it did. Still appreciate the customer service support for making the situation right with my purchase. Hope my review helps others.Update 3/7/2019Changing to 5 stars for excellent customer service.Received the replacement unit very quickly after speaking with CS. I received, but discovered the replacement unit did not have the temp control switch. CS then offered me a partial refund for the original unit and I accepted. When I tested the replacement unit however, it was making a lot of noise coming from the transformer, but still had proper voltage output. I put a nominal 10A output, and immediately the replacement unit caught fire and burnt out the safety fuse and two output transistors. I traced the issue to a bad solder joint and likely a defective transistor. In light of this, Chloe in CS gave me a full refund of my original unit. Looks to be a quality control problem. Since I have added the thermal switch to my original unit it has been working great. I use it as a bench power supply for testing 12 volt components. The replacement unit I have decided to attempt to repair. Bottom line super bright customer service has been amazing since I spoke with them and my experience with a defective unit should not deter you from purchasing this product. They do listen to their customer input and read the reviews. The last two photos of my review are of the replacement unit showing the failure of the transistors and the inside along with the date code it was manufactured.Update 02/26/2019:Chloe @ Superbright CS contacted me and she wanted to address my negative experience with the unit without the temp control by sending me a whole new replacement unit. Changing to 4 stars for good customer service. Will change to 5 stars once I inspect the replacement unit works as advertised with the temp control.Original Review: This is my second unit. I purchased the other one last year. That one is powering components for my beer keezer, it has been running great no issue. The fan has a temperature control switch and does not run unless it's under a heavy load.Unfortunately on this recent unit, it seems that the thermal bi-metal switch, (a KSD 9700, 45C, N/O type) was completely removed in the design. As a result the fan is constantly running. It seems from the reviews that some people receive a unit with a thermal switch and others do not. Feature advertised that it has thermal fan control, but not necessarily available in every unit...The fan is rated at 14vdc, with no load is running at 7 volts off an auxiliary winding in the transformer. It's actually very quiet. As you add a load to it the duty cycle in the transformer increases giving 13 volts powering the fan. At that point though, the fan is very loud. Some people may not like the operation of the fan running all the time. The unit may last a lot longer with the fan constantly running, but noise is an issue as well the life of the fan is questionable with constant duty. It seems silly to get rid of a 0.98 cent part.I'm a capable electronics person and I had a few thermal switches available. The procedure is to move the resistor to another solder pad, remove the jumper and insert the thermal switch where the jumper was. Using a little bit of superglue, attach the thermal switch to the inductor windings. These will get hot during operation and will cause the switch to close. This will turn on the fan. Once the temperature drops below the threshold the fan will stop. Same functionality as my first unit.Giving my rating three stars because I had to install the part myself. For the value in the money you cannot go wrong. The modification I did is optional and for those that don't mind the fan running all the time I'm sure they would give four or five stars.
